06. Street Treats at Kiyumizu-dera: Kore wa, nan desu ka?—Kathryn

The descent from Kiyumizdera was an odyssey of delicious cookie snacks. I literally could not resist the siren call of samples by almost every tourist store. (Though we skipped the pickles, tsukemono).

Cinnamon treats near Kiyumizu dera
Ken's all-time favorite are the cinnamon tile cookies. We stopped in one store to buy a bag. I think this womain was surprised that we asked to take a picture with her, but she knew the drill, flashing a peace sign at the very last moment.

Mochi cookies
These are the cookie samples which provided my morning's feast. I jostled along the hoardes of school kids to get one or two. (Ed: Or three or six). Yum. Ken would ask shyly, "And what are these??? Kore wa nan desu ka?" though he knew darned well.

Matcha mochi cookie
Here's a woman actually making the matcha azuki treats. She worked with efficiency and grace, almost as fast as we hungry tourists could eat. . .
